General Questions
What is a virtual gift card?
A virtual gift card (also called a digital gift card or e-gift card) is a prepaid payment method that exists in digital form rather than as a physical card. It is delivered electronically — typically as a unique code sent by email or SMS — and can be used online or, in some cases, in physical stores by displaying a barcode or QR code. Virtual gift cards carry a set monetary value that can be spent at the issuing retailer or on an associated payment network.
What is the difference between a virtual gift card and a physical gift card?
A physical gift card is a plastic card — similar to a credit or debit card — that you can hold and carry in your wallet. A virtual gift card exists only as a digital code or file. Both hold a prepaid monetary value, but virtual cards are delivered instantly by email or SMS, produce no physical waste, and are typically more convenient for online shopping. Physical cards can usually be used in-store more easily by swiping or tapping.
What is the difference between open-loop and closed-loop gift cards?
A closed-loop gift card is issued by a specific retailer or brand and can only be spent at that retailer's stores or website (e.g., a card for a specific gaming platform or streaming service). An open-loop gift card carries the logo of a major payment network (such as Visa or Mastercard) and can be spent anywhere that network is accepted — giving much more flexibility. Open-loop cards may carry activation or maintenance fees not typically found on closed-loop cards.
Can virtual gift cards be used in physical stores?
This depends on the card type and retailer. Open-loop virtual gift cards (prepaid Visa/Mastercard) can often be used in physical stores by adding the card details to a digital wallet (such as Apple Pay or Google Pay). Some closed-loop virtual gift cards come with a barcode that can be scanned at a till. However, many virtual gift cards are designed primarily for online use. Always check the specific card's terms and conditions and the retailer's policy.
Buying & Receiving
Where can I buy virtual gift cards?
Virtual gift cards are available directly from the issuing retailer's website, from supermarkets and newsagents that sell digital vouchers, from specialist gift card marketplaces, and sometimes from banks or financial apps. Always buy from official, reputable sources. GiftWave does not sell or distribute gift cards — we are an informational site only. Visit the official website of the retailer or platform whose card you want to purchase.
How long does it take to receive a virtual gift card?
In most cases, delivery is near-instant — the code arrives by email within seconds to a few minutes of purchase. Some issuers have a short processing window of up to 24 hours for security verification purposes, particularly for first-time buyers or high-value cards. If you have not received your card within the expected timeframe, check your spam folder and then contact the issuer's customer support.
What should I do if I did not receive my virtual gift card?
First, check your spam or junk email folder — automated delivery emails are sometimes filtered. Also check that the email address provided at the time of purchase was correct. If neither resolves the issue, contact the issuer's customer support team with your order confirmation details. They can re-send the code to your email. GiftWave is not able to assist with delivery issues as we do not sell or issue gift cards.
Can a virtual gift card be gifted internationally?
Many virtual gift cards can be sent to any email address in the world — making them ideal for international gifting. However, redemption may be restricted by geography: a card issued for a US retailer may only work on that retailer's US website or when billing to a US address. Check the card's geographic restrictions at the time of purchase. Some open-loop prepaid cards also have country-specific limitations.
Redemption & Balance
How do I redeem a virtual gift card?
The redemption process varies slightly by retailer, but it generally follows these steps: (1) Add items to your cart on the retailer's website. (2) Proceed to checkout and select a payment method. (3) Look for a "Gift Card," "Voucher," "Promo Code," or similar field. (4) Enter your code exactly as provided (case-sensitive in most cases). (5) Click "Apply" — the card's value is deducted from your total. If the purchase exceeds the card value, pay the remainder with another payment method.
Can a virtual gift card expire?
Many gift cards do have expiry dates, and policies vary by issuer and country. In many jurisdictions, there are consumer protection laws that require minimum validity periods (often 2–5 years) and restrict inactivity fees within that window. Always check the terms and conditions displayed at purchase and take note of any expiry date shown in your delivery email. Use your card before the expiry date to avoid losing the value.
How do I check my virtual gift card balance?
Most issuers provide a balance check page on their official website where you can enter your code to see the remaining balance. Some platforms show your balance when you log into your account. The remaining balance may also be displayed on your checkout confirmation page after a partial use. GiftWave does not have access to any gift card balances — please use the issuer's official balance check service.
What happens to the remaining balance if I don't spend the full amount?
If you use only part of a virtual gift card's value, the remaining balance stays on the card and is associated with your code. You can use the same code for future purchases until the balance reaches zero. There is no time limit to spend partial balances other than the card's overall expiry date. Keep your code safe — it is your access to the remaining funds.
Can I get a cash refund for a gift card I no longer want?
Policies on cash refunds for gift cards vary widely by issuer, retailer, and jurisdiction. Many issuers do not offer cash refunds for unused gift cards. Some may offer a credit or exchange. In certain countries and US states, there are laws requiring issuers to refund low-value residual balances on request. Check the specific issuer's refund policy or contact their customer support directly. GiftWave cannot facilitate or advise on specific refund requests.
Safety & Scams
Is it safe to buy virtual gift cards online?
Yes, buying virtual gift cards from official retailer websites or established, reputable gift card platforms is generally safe. Risks arise when buying from unofficial third-party sellers, auction sites, or social media marketplaces — where counterfeit or already-spent cards are commonly sold. Always verify the website is the issuer's official domain (check the URL carefully), look for HTTPS, and pay using a secure payment method that offers buyer protection.
How do I know if a gift card request is a scam?
The most reliable signal that something is a scam is any request to pay via gift card. Legitimate organisations — government agencies, courts, utilities, banks, tech companies, and businesses — never ask for payment in the form of gift card codes. Other warning signs include: urgency or pressure to act immediately, a threat of arrest, account closure, or legal action, requests to keep the transaction secret, and communication from unknown numbers or generic email addresses. When in doubt, hang up or stop communicating and verify independently through official channels.
What should I do if I gave my gift card code to a scammer?
Act quickly: (1) Contact the gift card issuer immediately — provide your purchase details and explain what happened. Some issuers may be able to freeze the card if the balance has not yet been spent. (2) Gather evidence — save copies of all communications with the scammer and your card purchase receipt. (3) Report the scam to your national consumer protection or fraud reporting agency (e.g., FTC in the USA, Action Fraud in the UK). (4) Do not pay further — scammers often follow up claiming they can recover your money for a fee. They cannot. Do not engage.
Can someone steal my gift card code from my email?
If your email account is compromised, any gift card codes stored in your inbox are at risk. Protect your email account with a strong, unique password and enable two-factor authentication (2FA). Delete gift card emails once the code has been redeemed or transferred to a secure location such as a password manager. Be vigilant about phishing emails designed to steal your email login credentials.
GiftWave contacted me asking for personal information — is that legitimate?
No. GiftWave does not proactively contact users, does not send unsolicited emails, and does not collect personal information of any kind. If you have received a message claiming to be from GiftWave requesting personal details, gift card codes, or payment, it is fraudulent. Please do not respond and report it to the relevant authorities.
