What Are Virtual Gift Cards?

A comprehensive educational guide to understanding digital gift cards — what they are, how they differ from physical cards, and why they've become so popular.

Defining a Virtual Gift Card

A virtual gift card (also called a digital gift card or e-gift card) is a prepaid payment instrument that exists entirely in digital form. Unlike a traditional plastic gift card that you hold in your wallet, a virtual gift card is delivered electronically — typically as a unique alphanumeric code sent via email, SMS, or made accessible through an app or website account.

At its core, a virtual gift card represents a set monetary value that can be spent at a specific retailer, group of retailers, or — in the case of open-loop cards — anywhere that accepts the underlying payment network (such as Visa or Mastercard).

Virtual vs. Physical Gift Cards

Both virtual and physical gift cards perform the same fundamental function — holding prepaid value for a recipient to spend. However, they differ significantly in delivery, use, and convenience.

Feature Virtual Gift Card Physical Gift Card
Delivery method Email, SMS, or app — instant Post or in person — takes days
Delivery speed Seconds to minutes 1–7+ business days
Use in-store Sometimes (via barcode/app) Usually yes
Use online Yes, by entering the code If the retailer provides an online portal
Risk if lost Low (resendable if email is accessed) High (like losing cash)
Environmental impact Minimal — no plastic used PVC plastic card + packaging
Last-minute suitability Excellent Poor unless bought in-store

Open-Loop vs. Closed-Loop Gift Cards

One of the most important distinctions to understand when learning about virtual gift cards is the difference between open-loop and closed-loop cards.

Closed-Loop Gift Cards

A closed-loop gift card is issued by a specific retailer or brand and can only be spent with that retailer. For example, a virtual gift card for a particular gaming platform can only be used to purchase games, content, or subscriptions on that platform — nowhere else.

Most retailer-specific gift cards (for streaming services, gaming stores, restaurant chains, etc.) are closed-loop. They are simpler to understand but offer less flexibility.

Open-Loop Gift Cards

An open-loop gift card is issued through a major payment network such as Visa, Mastercard, or American Express. Because these cards carry the network's logo, they can be spent at any merchant — physical or online — that accepts that payment method.

Open-loop cards are often called "prepaid debit cards" or "prepaid credit cards" and are popular because the recipient can spend the value wherever they choose. However, they may come with fees (such as an activation fee or monthly maintenance fee after a period of inactivity) and their own terms and conditions.

Key Difference: Closed-loop = spend at one brand only. Open-loop = spend anywhere the payment network is accepted.

How a Virtual Gift Card Stores Value

The value on a virtual gift card is stored on the issuer's servers, linked to the unique code generated at the time of purchase. There is no physical chip or magnetic stripe — the code itself is the key that unlocks access to the balance.

When you enter the code at checkout, the retailer's system queries the issuer's server to verify the code is valid, check the available balance, and deduct the transaction amount. This process happens in real time, typically within seconds.

Why Virtual Gift Cards Have Become So Popular

Virtual gift cards have seen explosive growth over the past decade. Several factors explain their popularity:

  • Convenience for buyers: No need to visit a store or wait for delivery. Gift cards can be purchased and sent in minutes at any hour.
  • Flexibility for recipients: The recipient chooses exactly what they want, eliminating the risk of an unwanted gift.
  • Suitable for remote gifting: Virtual cards are ideal for sending gifts to people in different cities or countries without shipping costs.
  • Eco-friendly alternative: No plastic card, no packaging, no delivery van — virtual cards have a significantly lower environmental footprint.
  • Corporate and incentive programmes: Businesses use virtual gift cards extensively for employee rewards, customer promotions, and survey incentives.
  • Accessibility for the unbanked: Prepaid virtual cards offer a payment option for people without traditional bank accounts or credit cards.

Understanding Card Validity and Expiry

Virtual gift cards may have an expiry date — a date after which the code becomes invalid and cannot be redeemed. Laws governing expiry vary by country and jurisdiction. In many regions, regulations require gift cards to remain valid for a minimum period (e.g., two to five years) and restrict issuers from charging inactivity fees within that window.

Always check the expiry date of any gift card you receive and plan to use it before that date. Some issuers allow expiry dates to be extended upon request — contact the issuer directly if you need to do this.

Who Issues Virtual Gift Cards?

Virtual gift cards are issued by a wide range of organisations:

  • Retailers — both online-only and brick-and-mortar stores with a digital presence
  • Streaming and entertainment platforms
  • Gaming companies and app stores
  • Banks and financial institutions — for open-loop prepaid cards
  • Specialist gift card providers — third-party platforms that offer a range of brands in one place
  • Employers and reward programmes — for staff incentives and customer loyalty
